Know what each job really costs

A busy schedule does not always mean a profitable business. Separate direct job costs from general overhead, assign transactions consistently, and review the numbers each month. We help organize materials, subcontractors, field labor, equipment costs and customer billing so your reports tell a clearer story.

We support builders, general contractors, remodeling companies and other construction businesses. We agree on the reporting approach based on your projects, contracts, workflow and available records. For HVAC, electrical, plumbing and other service businesses, explore our separate trade services accounting page.

What monthly accounting can include

Reliable books: bank and credit card reconciliations, transaction review and month-end close.
Useful reports: profit and loss, balance sheet and agreed job or project reporting.
Equipment and loans: match purchases, financing and principal/interest to supporting records.
CPA conversations: discuss profitability, cash flow and tax planning using current information.

Explore CPA-led bookkeeping, fractional CPA support and tax planning. Cleanup, payroll and specialized reporting are scoped separately when needed.

Example: job margin and overhead

Illustrative example—not a client result. A contractor has $100,000 of job revenue, $55,000 of materials and subcontractors, and $20,000 of direct labor. That leaves $25,000 before general overhead: a 25% job margin. If overhead is $15,000, the remaining operating profit is $10,000. Moving a direct job cost from overhead into job costs changes the reported job margin, but does not change total profit. Complete cost allocation and timing still matter.

Questions contractors ask

Can QuickBooks show job profitability?
QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced support Projects for tracking project income and costs. The reports are only as useful as the transactions and labor costs assigned to each project. We can review your setup and reporting needs.

Do I need a work-in-progress schedule?
It may be useful when projects cross reporting periods. First agree on the reporting basis, contract information, estimates and how progress is measured. Moving costs into an asset account alone does not establish accurate project reporting or determine your tax accounting method.

What should I prepare for a consultation?
Bring your recent financial statements, reconciliation status, prior tax return, project list, outstanding invoices, loan statements and major equipment purchase records. We will agree on secure access and the records needed before reviewing your books.
